The Toller and Children: An Ideal Playmate?

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is often sought after by families for its jovial character and attachment to its loved ones. But is it really suited to life with children?

A playful, tireless dog

The Toller was originally selected for retrieving game from the water, work that demands energy and enthusiasm. This liveliness shows up at home as a strong love of play — fetching a ball, running, swimming — activities that children love to share with him.

Socialization from the earliest age

As with any breed, how well a Toller gets along with children depends a great deal on early education and socialization. In our care, puppies are accustomed from their first weeks to contact with children of all ages, in a calm and positive setting.

Best practices at home

Even with a dog known for being gentle, teach children to respect the animal (not disturbing him while he’s eating or sleeping, not pulling his tail or ears), and always supervise interactions with young children.

Well guided, the Toller becomes a loyal and attentive playmate for the whole family.
